Outdoor Ceiling Lights
Outdoor lights are important to have because they provide a sense of security around our home when night has fallen. Most thieves will not come near a doorway that has light around it for fear that someone will see them and call the police. The hard part that many of us have is trying to find the right type of lights.
Just because these are used for security does not mean that we cannot get something that looks great. Outdoor ceiling lights are some of the best to use because they provide lighting around a larger area, are easy to install, and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles.
One fixture will usually cost between $100 to $300 depending on where you decide to but it from and who makes it. Try to choose something that is going to match the look of the home. For modern homes you might want to choose something that is made with a tinted aluminum finish. For a rustic home you might choose something that is made with a brass finish.
Installing Ceiling Lights
- First you must turn the power off via the outdoor circuit on the main switch. Use a neon circuit tester to make sure that there is absolutely no power coming from it.
- Find the ceiling outlet box on the porch. If there is already a ceiling fixture than all you have to do is remove the fixture that is mounted to the box.
- Look for a mounting strip on the box. This will be a metal strip that runs across the center of the opening of the box. If you cannot find one than you will need to attach one.
- Strip ¾ of an inch of insulation from the wires to prepare the light fixture.
- Now connect the wires running from the new fixture to the power box. The colors should be connected to each other (black to black).put caps over the black and white wires splices using wire nuts. Connect the green wire splice to the grounding screw or mounting strap.
- Place the wires into the outlet box and attach the fixture to the mounting strap via the manual instructions.
- Secure the canopy of the outdoor ceiling light fixture and turn the electrical power back on.
